Even the faintest light can lead to the brightest of days.
A text popped up on my phone:
“Mom, it feels so nice outside”
And he’s not wrong, not at all. There is a cool, gentle breeze blowing, the sun is shining, a few wispy clouds bring shade from moment to moment, it’s 80 degrees and the sky is blue.
But more importantly, my son thought to text me in the middle of his school day to let me know of the beauty of today. He knows how much I love a beautiful weather day, how much I love to be outside. And the reality of my 17 year old son dropping me a happy, just-because note filled my heart and made the day that much brighter.
Most of the time it doesn’t take much to lighten someone’s load and brighten their day. We all have the capacity to share light and love.
And we all know those people in our lives that bring sunshine to us every time we’re near them. They may not be able to fix your problems or even know about them, but a minute in their presence makes the load seem lighter and the world seem brighter.
In a world that can be so hard, carry so much worry and cause so much pain, it often seems like an impossible task to somehow make it better. But the truth is, even the faintest beam of light shines brightly in a darkened room. Kindness matters, thoughtfulness matters, compassion matters, generosity matters, gentleness matters. A smile to a stranger, a warm laugh with a friend, a helping hand to the mom carrying two kids and trying to reach groceries on the top shelf, a sincere conversation with the person who’s often forgotten. Small things that bring great light.
I thought twice about heading to the bay this morning. The sky was dark and heavy with clouds. But Buddy and I had to walk anyway, and it is always peaceful that direction. So we set off. Across the water only the smallest streak of yellow was breaking through the darkness.
But it prevailed.
The day was gorgeous.
The sun came out and the birds sang tunes.
Even the faintest light can lead to the brightest of days.
